Kirby Brown was born in Deep East Texas, raised in the Ozark foothills of north central Arkansas, and has since spent much of his life traversing an orbit between New York City, Nashville, and his mother state of Texas. From the idyllic, religious farm family he grew up in to the literary creative communities of NYC, Kirby’s music is a synthesis of seemingly-disparate influences. His writing channels the long narrative of the American songbook without nostalgia — it bears the torch of traditional form while simultaneously showcasing an entirely original artist. At-once affable and conversational, Kirby’s writing finds him peeling back the layers of himself and the world around him.
Justine, which features Americana Awards and Honors Emerging Act of the Year nominee Erin Rae, is a track from Kirby’s EP Dream songs. I really like the uplifting melodies. Besides, the delicate guitar-riffs are unique and showcase many new creative insights. Furthermore, I am also a big fan of the grandiose harmonies!
The lyrics are just like the sound very impressive. Kirby said to Wide Open Country recently, ”This song came at me quick. It fell on me like a ton of bricks. I’ve been mining the ditches and picking through gravel on the same stretch of mental highway for most of my career, and this song is my favorite roadside treasure I’ve found so far. He continues, ”To me, it captures a true snapshot of the conversation I’ve always had with myself and with the unknown: that, yes, life is painful… but in spite of and because of that it can also be indescribably beautiful. Especially when you’re looking really hard for the magic.”
You can say without any doubt that Kirby and Erin have made incredibly good music, Justin is a modern gem. Start streaming it as soon as possible and feel free to sing along while listening!
