Meet VILLAINELLE. The Brooklyn-based duo of Carly Durand and Amy Paige create a glittery, grungy concoction of female-fronted indie-pop music that promotes girl power.
Born in Philly, Amy started singing from the womb. Before finding her way to New York she realized her ability to craft a catchy pop hit in Portland, becoming a topline writer and forming Van Go Lion, an electro-pop project that landed its original songs on commercials, TV shows, and blogs worldwide.
Born in England, Carly brings her rock background to VILLAINELLE. It wasn’t until she picked up a guitar at age 13 she truly began to find her love of songwriting. With her previous band Battle Lines, she toured the UK, Europe and played SXSW. She was signed to No Sleep records releasing the 7” single Colonies and digital album Primal.
The duo began collaborating in a cramped Brooklyn apartment after searching for likeminded musicians on craigslist. It was the first time either of them had written and produced solely with another female, and it clicked.
WITCHES is VILLAINELLE’s debut single and it sounds amazing. I really like the quirky melodies. Besides, the vocals are powerful. Furthermore, I am also a big fan of the dynamics and unique textures.
On the single, VILLAINELLE says: ”We wrote and produced this track soon after we met and realized neither one of us had ever worked exclusively with another female before. It made us feel powerful! This song was inspired by all the people who’ve come out against their abusers. We imagined a secret coven of witches, meeting up in the woods in the middle of the night to cast a spell over their predators.”
