Space Captain is a Brooklyn based psych-soul group signed to UK indie label Tru Thoughts and includes members Maralisa Simmons-Cook (vocalist/lyricist), Alex Pyle (bass and production), Gray Hall (guitar and production), Mike Haldeman (guitar), Joey Ziegler (drums), Joy Morales (keyboard) and Lessie Vonner (trumpet).
They recently released their new single Secret Garden.
The song sounds so good. I like the dreamy textures. Besides, the vocals are sublime. Furthermore, I’m also a fan of the memorable hooks and solid grooves.
Lyrically, Maralisa delivers. Her words flow with authenticity.
Brimming with nostalgia and sentimentality, Simmons-Cook contemplates the varied parts that make up each of our secret gardens – our sanctuaries – and how we build those worlds not only for ourselves, but to welcome others into them. “It captures whatever defines home for the listener, whether that space is found in nature, in an apartment or in one’s own mind as a collection of their memories”, she explains, “It’s not the physical space but rather the feeling that is created by holding onto something that feels entirely your own”.
The music video really captures the essence of the song. Visually, it looks cool.
Secret Garden was filmed in Maralisa’s hometown of West Marin, California as well as San Francisco with director Chris Morgan and producer Nick Vaughn. Locations include Roys Redwoods in the San Geronimo Valley and Maralisa’s family bar, Specs’ Twelve Adler Museum Cafe, in North Beach, San Francisco, which her grandfather Specs opened in 1968 and is now owned and operated by her and her mother. The 52-year-old business serves as a watering hole for artists, activists, writers, travelers and weirdos and has created an important space for community and historic and cultural preservation in San Francisco.
These locations were carefully chosen to represent what defines a sanctuary for Maralisa – places in which she feels fully at home, where her memories, treasured trinkets and soul reside. The video also includes a beautiful baroque-like set built and filmed at Little Giant Lighting & Grip in the Mission District of San Francisco, where Maralisa appears as a florist building her bouquet and surrounded by meaningful objects.
Space Captain’s music connects with people. They have their own style.
Secret Garden deserves 5 stars. It’s captivating from start to finish.
