In her new single Afloat, UK singer-songwriter Tonia is reflecting on a past relationship and all the ways in which she became too dependent on the other person. She struggled to make any decisions or think for herself, which led both parties to become exhausted.
This experience taught Tonia a lot about who she is and what she wants in a relationship. She’s now more secure in her decision making, knowing that she can trust her own judgment. Her newfound independence has also made her feel empowered and removed any fear she had of facing the world alone.
Tonia sings incredibly well here. She doesn’t adhere to the rigid structure of most pop songs, but instead lets her phrases flow and ebb in a way that feels more natural and organic. It’s this freedom that allows her to really get creative with the melody.
