Emerging Montreal singer-songwriter duo The Night Owls don’t look too much to others for inspiration, preferring to do things spontaneously instead. Their genre-bending self-titled debut album consists of eight captivating songs that vary greatly in style.
I’d like to begin by discussing My Lighthouse, which has impressive guitar work. Particularly fond of the chorus because of its catchy melody. The segment around 1:51 also piques my interest, because it puts special emphasis on the instrumentation.
I Want You Close is perhaps the most experimental track from the album, featuring a mysterious intro that makes you think you’re floating somewhere in the universe. After this, the sound begins to open up slowly, and then develops into something enchanting.
The project ends with When The Sun Rises Again, a song that reflects the spirit of the album brilliantly. It’s well-balanced and brings attention to the context when needed. Totally mind-blowing, if you ask me.
It’s safe to say that The Night Owls have delivered a project that you’ll still discuss in 10 years time, and considering that this is only their debut, we should expect big things from them going forward. They’re on another level, one that’s difficult to reach.
