Virens, a duo consisting of actresses Louisa Connolly-Burnham and singer-songwriter James New, release their debut EP, couples therapy. It arose from an unexpected love between them. They met during lockdown, and have been inseparable since then. couples therapy discusses the trials and tribulations of relationships. What’s cool about this project is that it’s entirely self-funded, making it even more real. You’ll spend 12 minutes and 59 seconds on another planet.
The EP opens with salut!, a track that varies in volume, sometimes mellow, sometimes dynamic. I like how the guitar gives the sound its identity. stitch me back up will keep you immersed, especially when the chorus hits. Louisia’s voice sweeps over a unique melody during submitted to sin, which has an emotional quality that I find compelling.
couples therapy ends with don’t you want me and a demo version of three leaf clover. They conclude the album brilliantly, elevating the folk genre to fascinating heights. Virens really delivered something special, and it’s only fair to praise them for their inventiveness and drive. The two understand what good music is, that’s for sure.
