UK artist Kohla wrote and self-produced Beautiful about an emotionally manipulative relationship she was in, at a point where she broke free from her delusions. The lyrics are heartfelt and speak to the soul. Their influence cannot be underestimated.
Taking influence from vintage cinema (Audrey Hepburn’s ‘Moon River’) and alternative R&B (FKA Twigs), Kohla experimented with ambient soundscaping, nature samples, recording her own acoustic guitar and having her friend Louise play violin to reflect her feelings of quiet bewilderment. The amalgamation of these diverse elements forges a dreamy, evocative composition that provides the ideal backdrop for Kohla’s vocal performance.
