Singer-songwriter Taylor Kelly believes in communicating from the heart. Her music is an outlet to let you know what’s going on within. Kelly opens up about how OCD had taken control of her life via her debut EP, The Spins. Some songs were written before the official diagnosis, and others afterward. However, the lyrics seem connected, as the project tells one cohesive story. A bit of therapy was woven into it, as well as feelings from the past.
Sometimes, which opens the EP, was written back in 2019. It explores the complexity of being human. A horn arrangement, violin, viola, cello, and a simple chord progression make up the sound. Take Me carries the set vibe further, spotlighting Taylor’s confidence and grace. Among the instruments found here are trumpets and trombones.
Fit In addresses intrusive thoughts and struggles with OCD. The repetitive chords and lead keyboard line echo the message spread by the lyrics. This kind of joint working helps things to thrive. Percussive instruments (including mouth percussion) are used toward the end, so expect a healthy dose of chaos. The vocals are as gleaming as diamonds.
Born out of vulnerability and self-awareness, Ain’t It Funny documents a moment of feeling out of place and anxious. Taylor’s stripped-down approach, featuring vocals, guitar, and light instrumentation get under your skin.
Taylor Kelly’s reflection on Attention reveals how the crunchy melody and harmony, influenced by Butcher Brown, inspired the lyrics that transition from individualistic struggles to thoughts about being attracted to someone. The post-chorus brings relief, with the notes of the melody aligning with chord tones. Adding Jamicka on bass adds heft to things. The performance completes the picture.
Closing the EP on a meditative note, the title track is a breezy yet contemplative creation inspired by life’s uncertainties. Taking cues from various influences like Anderson.Paak and Mahalia, it balances elation with introspection.
Kelly has the talent to be a star on the biggest stages. The Spins differs in style rather than relying on one. And, as you’ll see, everything here is lyrically honest. Check out the EP below!
