Rising band Icarus Phoenix doesn’t fit easily into any single category. They’re free spirits and love experimentation. It’s for this reason that their music has the kind of sparkle that you rarely hear in other music. Want proof? Okay, okay, I get it. Well, just listen for a moment to Icarus Phoenix’s latest album, I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said. When a title like this greets you, you know you’re in the right place. It’s poetic and raises questions.
Let’s take a look at some of the tracks. High Tide is one of the most momentous. It talks about overcoming the inner battles and dehumanization experienced after a divorce and starting afresh in a different environment. Icarus Phoenix voices the struggle for self-worth beyond societal expectations of material success. Doctor! Doctor! tackles the process of coping with existential dilemmas and struggling to find purpose and value in life. The song is based on an appointment lead singer Drew Danburry had with a doctor to debate the reason for existence.
Things are organic all over the board musically. I fancy how instruments such as guitar, bass, and drums give you the perception that you’re listening to a live performance. The vocals mesh resplendently, specifically on songs like When it’s time to go (I don’t know if it is) and Hatillo 2.
Icarus Phoenix takes creative risks without further ado. They also have, shall we say, very direct lyrics, sometimes not the brightest, but always honest. And isn’t that what fans want to hear? They want to hear the truth. Icarus Phoenix succeeds in that aspect.
I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said is an experience. You shouldn’t consume it while lounging casually on the beach, but rather when you have time to fully absorb the details. So you know what to do now.
