Perth, Australia-born Sophie Lilah has lately been finding her niche as an indie-folk performer. She has now made available her debut EP, Fear/Instinct, where she talks about the perspectives she has gained from residing in her personal space. The intensity she felt during the moments the songs’ events took place have long outgrown her, but Sophie still wants to reach out and give back to those who try hard, thereby growing further.
Through incremental development, the project’s first track, Real, pulls you into the type of waiting room Sophie envisioned for you. She uses strong contrasts in her voice that parade flexibility and discipline. With its percussion and guitar placed towards the back, the song has an equal mix of sounds.
Content but I Find is pure ethereal ecstasy. Its calmness and Sophie’s whimsical singing call forth a climate that’s sweetly melancholic. The song rolls at a slow dreamy rhythm, making you feel as if you’re crossing through a vague head knocking memory; thus summoning all those mixed feelings we went through when we were teenagers.
As the EP advances, Dreamland marks the most major change in sound. This third song delivers funky tones that accentuate tempo. Its catchy bass line supplies an instantly rhythmic base for it to move on from.
Collecting Dust is the fourth track on Fear/Instinct. It takes time to get going, reminding us how often depressive episodes progress slowly. Lilah’s voice cooperates with other sounds in the song depicting complicacies of mental health barriers.
The closing track Sinking pushes a subtle acoustic guitar sound. This underlying method permits Lilah’s otherworldly vocal cords to resonate rightfully. The light textures give the illusion of standing in a small venue.
We believe Sophie exceeds the ordinary artist. She does what she likes to do and lets that be her unique way of working. Check out Fear/Instinct below!
