Brian J’s career as a musician has been one of constant growth and exploration. Initially making his mark as a respected sideman for renowned artists like Cedric Burnside and Corey Henry, Brian steadily carved out his own artistic voice. His transition from backing guitarist to bandleader with The Pimps of Joytime typifies his competence to be unconventional. This evolution laid the cornerstone for his solo project, Gitkin, where he accepts wholeheartedly his instrumental virtuosity.
Gitkin’s Golden Age underlines an eclectic assortment of musical styles, mingling cumbia, North African, and Middle Eastern influences with his signature New Orleans-inspired guitar sound. The album’s ten tracks drive you through versatile sonic landscapes
Take for example the song Go Time. With its bouncy organ solo by Palestinian musician Simon Moushabeck, it recalls the funky vibes of legendary New Orleans artists like Art Neville and Booker T. Jones. The drummer Washington Duke’s second-line beat on Ninth Ward Grind also takes noticeable inspiration from the Crescent City, while Gitkin’s guitar arrangement provides just a hint of “home-on-the-range western twang” that defines the track. Delta Mystic layers an array of disco and cosmic sounds over a vintage drum machine pattern, developing a bayou-inspired atmosphere that longtime fans of J.J. Cale would surely appreciate.
Cumbia-ya pays homage to the Latin American rhythm, whereas The One echoes the Mississippi Delta blues. Ice Coffee gives off a refreshing vibe, and Tall Oaks Drive injects a splash of intricateness into the tracklist.
As Gitkin continues to refine his style, Golden Age proves to be a breakthrough, strengthening his significance in the realm of world-influenced instrumental music. The album promises to be a hit with those seeking a fresh, globally-inspired sound.
