Kylie Rothfield’s new single The Barrel is another step forward in her evolving sound. Co-written and produced alongside a talented group of collaborators, the track takes Rothfield’s indie pop sensibilities to deeper levels.
Layers of gently guitars riffs and warm drums beats set the idyllic backdrop for the soul-baring performance. It’s in the same vein as Allen Stone, Remi Wolf, Emily King, and John Mayer.
The lyrics fundamentally explore the theme of settling for less and frequently feeling “at the bottom of the barrel.” Rothfield is wrestling with loneliness and questioning why she consistently gives more than she receives in relationships. You could conclude that she follows a pattern of forgiving people who don’t reciprocate, which leads to unfulfillment.
