In Illusions, singer-songwriter Liadh aims to form a vivid sonic landscape that represents detachment and fear she faced during difficult times. She found inspiration from works of fiction like Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi and Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland that explore complex themes surrounding reality, the passage of time, and the concept of self-identity. Just as the characters in these stories must navigate uncertain realities, Liadh recounts her own struggles with understanding what was real versus what existed in her mind.
While vulnerable in its lyrical admission of mental anguish, Illusions retains an underlying message of hope. When Liadh felt herself most vulnerable to intrusive thoughts and scary sensations, she was able to remember that these were merely illusions—not truly representative of her true self.
