Singer/songwriter Iris Van Merse releases her new single, Movies. The lyrics talk about how women are often put on a pedestal in movies as the romantic interest or fantasy object for the male lead character. But the song argues that really being seen this way isn’t actually very flattering. It’s exactly the opposite.
As for the music, Movies got influences from genres like dream pop and art pop. It’s very cinematic and moody, which I think helps capture that film noir, romantic but also questioning tone. The vocals are full of the necessary energy, which brings the context even more into the picture.
