Plumes, an up-and-coming singer-songwriter, recently released Jeanne’s Visions as the second single from her forthcoming album Many Moons Away. It recounts the historical account of Joan of Arc’s initial visions that sparked her divine mission.
According to the lyrics, one afternoon while tending to her garden, Joan of Arc (Jeanne d’Arc in French) was struck by an unearthly experience – voices intermingled with the pealing of church bells that called her to a greater purpose. The song depicts Jeanne attempting to discern the spiritual messages amidst the sonic commotion. Though perplexed by the strange occurrence at first, she quickly understood how she could help lift the siege and inspire the nation.
Musically, the arrangement utilizes harmonic layers in the guitar and viola to achieve an ethereal texture, mirroring Jeanne’s otherworldly experience. Further, the rhythm of the guitar during the verses resembles the trotting of Jeanne’s horse as she heads into battle. The closing lines – “I’ve been sung and unsung, sung again and undone” – allude to the changing perceptions of Jeanne over time, while still maintaining her unwavering conviction.
