A new lo-fi pop project led by Nathania Rubin, Agora Sci-Fi centers around the fictional character “Z.” This character was sentenced to prison for crimes against society that were unclear. Sounds mysterious, right? I think so, at least.
Agora Sci-Fi just shared her debut EP, Finding It Hard to Explain Something So Obvious. The project talks about the things we don’t like about our lives, but not consciously notice. Like travelling to work, for example. Most of the time, we do it on auto-pilot without much thought. But it can also be something entirely different. It varies from person to person, of course.
The included songs are phenomenal by themselves. portals opens the project and has this lo-fi kind of vibe. Its constant use of guitar weaves a charming framework. sloppy continues the project in the same style, but with more dynamic drums. The third track, tabs, feels lighter than the previous two and is predominantly pop-oriented. for Jandenk sounds slightly nostalgic, featuring classic rock influences. to be free marks the end of the EP. It’s typified by an atmospheric cloud that tries to obscure the gritty underpinning.
Agora Sci-Fi strikes me as one of the most creative acts I’ve seen in a while. Nathania really does something unique, looking at the accompanying story and everything. Finding It Hard to Explain Something So Obvious is absolutely worth your time. Start listening below!
