Every now and then, a strange internet discovery hits you right in the heart, and that’s what sparked Paige O’s new single, Scarecrow Village. It’s inspired by a real place in Japan where life-sized scarecrows stand in for villagers who’ve passed away or moved on. It’s a little eerie, yes, but Paige saw something more.
“I thought it was so beautiful,” she says. “But everyone I showed it to said it was creepy or scary. That really shocked me.”
For Paige, the village became a symbol for emotional stillness, the kind that persists when the people you love leave, and you stay behind. “Part of me wishes I could make scarecrows of all the friends who’ve moved away for school while I stayed home,” she admits.
The song’s production captures the feeling of the lyrics well. It starts gently, like a subtle thought, then builds into a swirl of tension, mirroring a panic attack, and finally settles into calm.
