Written by Avery Raquel and Ali Levy, Shoes is a track that sticks in your head like any good pair of shoes does. The instrumentation is a playful mix of acoustic guitar, trombone, synths, drums, piano, and the slick slide and electric guitar of renowned Canadian Roots guitarist Ariel Posen. Avery and Ali’s emotive vocals are front and center, harmonizing like they’ve been finishing each other’s sentences for years, while producer Matt McCormack wraps it all in an production that’s edgy, contemporary, and just a little bit magical.
Shoes tiptoes lyrically through the awkward, heart-fluttering territory of early relationship insecurities. Avery and Ali ask the questions many of us have secretly wondered: “Do you think about her still? Do I have her shoes to fill?” It’s an elegant tug-of-war between vulnerability and angst.
Between the rich storytelling, masterful musicianship, and lyrical candor, Shoes is another step forward in Avery’s evolution as a songwriter and performer. Check it out below!
