To Believe I’m the Sun is a heartfelt search towards self-worth and acceptance. Across eight intimate tracks, Pacific Northwest singer-songwriter Meredith Adelaide tries to find answers. The album’s title, drawn from a line in One Foot Out, “he’s got the knack to believe I’m the sun”, accurately sums up the balancing dance between ego and self-belief that runs throughout the record. The lyrics have a powerful overall impact, becoming more and more meaningful with each listen.
The album sounds peaceful. Adelaide’s beautiful vocal melodies are enveloped by cozy guitars and subtle arrangements, giving rise to songs that are full of heart and not formulaic at all. This makes them exceptional.
Highlights include Big Songs, which opens the album with confident energy, and Guard Dog, where sonic harmony meets reflective lyricism. Lost (Whistling) is notable for its unique arrangement, featuring melodic patterns that stick in the mind. Closing track What Do I Know is also well done, as it successfully closes the album on a contemplative resolve.
With To Believe I’m the Sun, Adelaide asserts full ownership over her creations, dreams, and life. She really impresses, showing that few are on the same level as she is. Clicking repeat seems to be the only option here.
