Australian singer-songwriter Jess Ball collaborates with UK hip-hop artist Jelani Blackman on Lately, a reflective and emotionally open song that represents pop and rap in its most direct form.
Jess Ball explains she wrote Lately about looking back on past mistakes from a more mature perspective. The song digs into that uneasy feeling of realizing how much you’ve changed, and sometimes struggling to understand the choices you made before you grew into the person you’re now.
I love Jess’ performance throughout. Jelani adds an impactful verse that deepens the track’s purpose, bringing a grounded, introspective tone. The contrast between Jess’s melodic delivery and Jelani’s smooth, steady flow gives the song balance.
