The Caroles is an indie folk duo comprised of acclaimed songwriters Emily Anderson and Christina Apostolopoulos. Their second EP, The Caroles: Part II, came out recently. I do really like this project. It feels sincere in a way that’s rare for holiday-adjacent releases, and you can tell it came from a place of real collaboration rather than obligation. Emily and Christina sound completely at home together, like this project was inevitable once they started writing.
Melt My Heart is particularly memorable for me. The strings sound beautiful, for example. But the lyrics are brilliant too, speaking about falling in love in the winter when everything is slower. Knock On My Front Door features wonderful guitar work and a narrative that doesn’t overexplain itself; it trusts the listener.
Feels Like Christmas may have the most stunning vocals on the EP. The song explores the kind of happiness found in being with someone who makes even the most ordinary days feel special. It starts off very low-energy and introverted before becoming more wondrous.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Emily and Christina’s takes on Do You Hear What I Hear, Up On The Housetop and Jingle Bells. They manage to make them feel intimate and modern, especially Jingle Bells, which comes across as reflective and tender instead of big and ceremonial.
The musicianship across the EP is fascinating. The productions keep everything close, which is perfectly in line with the season. Check out The Caroles: Part II below!
