Two years ago, independent singer-songwriter Maya Payne found herself in a place many artists know too well: creatively paralyzed, personally adrift, and convinced the world had heard the last of her music. Bluebird looks back on that period with a certain clarity, drawing from lyrics written across two sides of the globe, from her bedroom in Ōtautahi / Christchurch, New Zealand, to a fleeting chapter living in the UK. “I was subletting in London and my landlord had a piano,” Maye recalls. “When she wasn’t home, I would sit and write. I had a chest infection so I wasn’t at work for a couple days, and I just sat down… and the song happened in 10 minutes.”
The song found its final form in Glasgow, Scotland, where producer Jamie Holmes, in collaboration with musician David Milne, helped Maya refine it. Mastered by Robin Sutherland, the track took on the wings it needed.
The music video features Scotland’s clifftops, the iconic Neist Point Lighthouse, and coastal scenes from Musselburgh. The dramatic landscapes echo the song’s emotional terrain.
