Luca Lowe has always expressed herself artistically with a keen self-awareness, but her latest single, Candy Wrapper, feels like she’s caught herself mid-thought in the most compelling way possible.
She wrote it in April as an exploration of her friendships. She often finds herself in lopsided relationships, making herself smaller, and the song was her way of questioning that. She wonders if there’s a term for when you adopt a belief or a way of being so thoroughly that you never even question it, and then she asks whether she should be questioning at all. Maybe she’s happy in this way of being.
The lyrics are simply so good here. Lowe shows throughout emotional intelligence, a deep level of introspection without becoming indulgent, and a solid understanding of relationships. Her alt-pop instincts keep it accessible and melodically warm even as the narrative undercurrent runs deep.
For a song born from a solitary moment of self-reflection, Candy Wrapper resonates with surprising weight. Check it out below!
