Dublin punk-funk outfit Def Nettle have spent the past year building momentum with considerable purpose. Singles Get Me Here, Headwrecker, and Nothing For It earned extensive praise from BBC Radio 6, RTÉ 2FM, Louder Than War and Hot Press, whereas Mohawk kicked off 2026 by landing RTÉ 2FM’s Track of the Week. The Party, released April 24th alongside a GLOK remix, is the next logical step.

The original track has Glen Brady (the frontman) drawing on influences like Talk Talk, Prefab Sprout, The The, and The Cure, but in a fresh way rather than slavishly copying. The lyrics work on different levels, using wordplay to describe someone out of touch, in addition to hinting at political meanings behind the word “party.” Def Nettle are good at mixing serious ideas with catchy music, and this one exemplifies that.

The arrangement is particularly pleasing. Accordion melodies wind through the track so well, underpinned by Ely Siegel’s fluid bass lines and Dissenter Melody’s returning jazzy guitar tones. Damien Fox’s drums are minimalistic yet punchy, fitting both an 80s alternative vibe and a modern indie sound. The backing vocals bring a soft, playful feel that balances the sharper parts of the song.

The GLOK remix totally transforms the vibe. Andy Bell (from Ride, now playing with Oasis) takes the original apart and rebuilds it into something darker and more intense. The catchy pop ambiance is replaced with a slow, hypnotic groove, with hints of Depeche Mode and Massive Attack. Brady’s vocals are pushed into the background, becoming more about atmosphere than storytelling. Very impressive overall!

Def Nettle were named one of The Irish Times’ “New Irish Acts To Savour“ in 2023, and they show why here. The two versions of the song feel totally different, but both work really well. Check them out below!
