Julia Belle is a singer-songwriter from Wellington. She recently released her new single, Aurora, which deals with longing, nostalgia, and the fantasies we create around people we cannot let go of. The song is inspired by an evening when she was listening to Pink Floyd with an old flame. He told her that the Northern Lights didn’t exist in this part of the world before he put on The Dark Side of the Moon. As Pink Floyd references weave through the song, a strange night becomes a meditation on memory, escapism and missing someone who is already gone, knowing it has to end.
Aurora sounds beautiful with its cinematic-layered structure. I find the drums particularly impressive. The vocals are iconic because they have a way of sneaking under your skin.
Belle lives up to expectations well with Aurora, showing once again what she can do. Check it out below!
