Shoulda Known by Liverpool based trio AMBA is about recognizing red flags in a relationship and taking action to avoid heartbreak. They accurately describe the pain you feel when you realize that your partner might not be the right one for you. The lyrics emphasize that we should always trust our intuition, even if it’s difficult to admit that things aren’t working out.
The production of Shoulda Known is so reminiscent of mid 2000’s R&B that it’s practically transporting me back in time. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this resurgence in mid 2000’s sounds in today’s music. In fact, it’s been happening for a few years now and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Some might say it’s a nostalgic move, but I think there’s something more to it than that. What I love about this revival is that modern acts are taking these old sounds and making them their own. They’re incorporating new elements and giving the genre a fresh perspective. And as a result, we’re getting some really amazing music.
AMBA will achieve tremendous success if they continue in this vein. All three are talented and have the ability to empower others through music. Therefore, tell those who are unfamiliar with AMBA what they are missing out on. It will not be long before this group becomes widely known.
