Elba Rose crafts moody alternative pop tracks. Her latest single, Playing Pretty, has a great buildup, with a lot of attention paid to the sounds. The vocals move slowly to their destination, where the sun and moon meet. My favorite moment is around 1:50, when the production takes on a mystical quality.
The lyrics are filled with rage. Playing Pretty aims to be an anthem for those who are learning to be themselves even when it feels like the world is against them. Elba is tired of playing nice just to fit into everyone else’s expectations.
