London-born artist Billy Cullum believes in keeping things authentic. His debut album, Whatever Happened Next, came out recently, and I’m obsessed. All songs on the album were written by Billy himself and produced by J MAC. Kaity Rae also contributed to the writing.
The project opens with Gold, a quiet folk-influenced song that immediately transports you into a different atmosphere. It helps you get a sense of who Billy is. The title track sounds much more upbeat and pop-driven. It features some cool synths, for example. Songs like Say My Name, The Key, and Radio on further display Billy’s musical versatility, proving that he can deliver in any genre.
Whatever Happened Next is very well produced, but the lyrics are equally impressive. The album follows Billy’s life from his early years until his present day experiences as an openly queer artist. Themes like relationships, sexuality, mental health and identity are discussed in depth. Billy hopes the music will resonate with queer community members and fierce allies.
You can always count on quality from Billy, no matter what he does. Whatever Happened Next feels personal and, most importantly, heartfelt, making it all the more powerful. There’s a soul behind this. Billy wants you to press the repeat button, so you can hear clearly what he has to say.
