Emerging singer-songwriter Millie Kirkpatrick made an interesting choice by turning what could have been a melancholy ballad into an upbeat pop anthem. The lyrics of Lies paint a rather bleak portrait of someone stuck in a relationship that lacks real love or meaning. However, Millie paired these sad sentences with a buoyant, energetic melody and instrumentation that echoes The 1975.
By fusing these conflicting elements, Millie successfully expresses the feel of someone who has found themselves in a passionless relationship but still yearns for the high of new romance. I can’t think of anything more next level. Millie is truly a creative genius.
