Wastelander’s vocals are the anchor of each song, with a tone reminiscent of classic singers of the genre. He brings the introspective lyrics to life, reflecting on topics such as lived-in romance, self-doubt, disillusionment, and awakening self-compassion. While the themes explored are deeply personal, Wastelander has a way of articulating feelings we have all grappled with before. Sonically, What Is Left of Me is also interesting. Wastelander blends layered guitars, choral vocal tracks, baroque-style keyboards such as mellotron and hammond organ, pedal steel parts, cinematic strings, hiphop loops, and chaotic horns. The instrumentation builds an expansive sonic texture throughout, twisting and turning between different types of moods and intensities. At times swelling into grand, symphonic crescendos, at others stripped down to the bare essentials. Songs like Figurue it Out and Room Full of Elephants exemplify Formant’s strength at crafting melodies and arrangements that are memorable.
