Rather than being surrounded by people, Penny Roox prefers to be alone. As she wanders the city or attends parties, she meditates on the stories of others. Writing them down almost feels therapeutic to her. Debut EP By My Side is a haven for Penny’s creative drive.
The project opens with the title track. It’s kind of similar to Lana Del Rey’s sound, but more up-tempo. Glowing piano and strings move the sound from one place to another. The lyrics speak of a romance that ends abruptly. This is always difficult, since you had high expectations. And well, everything falls into water now.
Baby Blue has an acoustic aesthetic. The guitar glides with astounding grace. Here, Penny descends into the head of someone who’s alienated from the other. Pop Song builds on the previous track thematically. I love how the words unfold like magic again. Penny’s performance helps clarify what’s happening.
Garden Of Eden explains that the singer-songwriter sometimes experiences love as a drug. She’s convinced she can fly to the place of paradise if she spreads her wings. From a sonic perspective, things are uplifting. When This All Ends reveals wonderful layers of vocals and guitar, before piano joins in. The ending is absolutely fascinating, without any hint of cheesiness at all.
Penny can easily rise to the top if she keeps doing what she’s doing. Just listening to this EP once will have you wanting more. Penny proves that heartfelt music still delivers the goods.
