AWOLNATION isn’t interested in taking things easy, but instead targets to write music that cuts across creative borders. On his most recent project, The Phantom Five, he unleashes the gas. In other words, he speaks his heart out. And let that be a good reason to take the time to listen to every single song.
Jump Sit Stand March has the honor of opening the album. It talks about how silly it is to please everyone. It should be different in fact. Emily Armstrong’s featured vocals are the sugar on top. A sea of guitars gives you the opportunity to fall into Party People. After this, Panoramic View follows. This one tends to be a lot dreamier and sometimes even spacious. I Am Happy, complete with lighthearted synths and rap influences, is another miracle.
Now it’s the turn of lead single Barbarian. It delineates the inner pressure of transformation and reinvention, resounding the metamorphosis of the protagonist in Kafka’s work, who changes into a bug. Bang Your Head will have you banging your head like a headbanger. I love the way the tempo increases here, nice experimental touch. City of Nowhere sounds as if it was made in the 80s, but still feels very current. Letter To No One talks about finding comfort in moody moments, voiced through appreciation for gloomy weather and love songs.
When I Was Young mulls over former experiences and youthful indiscretions, juxtaposed with the realities of adulthood. I dig the way the synths build momentum in the second half. Outta here sometimes reminds me of Queen due to its cinematic rock influences. Really cool song that examines topics such as escapism and desperation.
AWOLNATION likes to vary, as this project proves. I’m sure this is a dream come true for anyone who appreciates fine sonic details. Check out The Phantom Five below!
