Canadian singer-songwriter Veronica Charnley is the force behind Plumes, an indie pop / classical crossover project. She releases her new single, Say Sea, Take Me. The song starts with violins that immediately set up a melody that forms a steady framework. As time goes on, a 5/4 rhythm pops up, flipping the sound temporarily. And just when you least expect it, bluesy sounds anchor the arrangement. You’ll hear there’s a lot going on here. This is a great thing in a world where most people choose the easy route.
Say Sea, Take Me talks about merging with a lover, much as a river does with a lake. It’s also an ode to the sea itself. It amazes me often how nature works and how it sometimes represents humanity.
