Alternative rock band OurGlassZoo from Vancouver makes music with a unique edge. Their third album Horizons literally broadens their horizons. It goes in different directions, both lyrically and musically. But I’ve to say that the themes are what matter most. The focus is on how we humans move around nowadays and how it isn’t right. And to be honest, that’s true.
The album starts with Shut Up, which immediately catches your ear. OurGlassZoo shows they’re aware of someone who uses their words and actions to manipulate or control others. The person in question seems to gather false allies and avoid facing their own downfall. While Shut Up is very hectic sound-wise, Hey Now! is less so. It’s actually quite soulful.
Home, featuring Rachael Schroeder & O.K.A, talks about strength born of overcoming challenges (“fall and heal in our own means”) and the determination to find a way back to a place of comfort and safety (“I’ll find our way home”). It has cool melodic tones and the drums are punchy enough to cut through the mix.
Burn, featuring O.K.A, talks about searching for meaning in a world that often feels surreal and driven by superficial desires, such as fame. It truly acknowledges that we crave more.
Innocence continues on the groovy tones that Hey Now! introduced. I love it. There are times when it reminds me a bit of Coldplay. For The World To See pays homage to what made the 80s so great and is nostalgic. Spark provides a cinematic experience. The song starts slowly but becomes quite intense as it progresses.
OurGlassZoo is going strong here. They want to let people know that they’re in the spotlight and aren’t hiding in the background. Horizons covers a lot of ground. So sit back and let yourself be carried away by it.
