Rising singer-songwriter Emily Jeanne Brown releases her new single, Nina. With its lush strings, gentle rhythms and sultry pedal steel, it conjures up a wealth of memories. Singing from the point of view of a character in Anton Chekhov’s play The Seagull, Brown uses her agile soprano voice to channel early Joni Mitchell. Meanwhile, the musical backdrop draws inspiration from modern alt-folk artists like Becca Stevens, Madison Cunningham and Weyes Blood.
The song reflects on fading memories and the intense craving to reconnect with a past version of yourself. However, Emily feels locked out from that past, unable to access the person she used to be. This is reflected in the struggle to open metaphorical doors that remain tightly shut.
Emily keeps delivering. What strikes me most about her is how she approaches music not merely as a product to consume, but as a means of communicating reality. Check out Nina below!
