Singer-songwriter Annie J made Can’t Solve It, featuring Kate Dinsmore, from a simple but poignant phrase and chord progression that resonated with her. Inspired by another’s story of yearning for belonging in childhood, she viewed it through the lens of her own experiences feeling apart from societal expectations. There’s deep empathy in her observation, as she feels so much for these kids who cannot fit the mold into which they’re being forced, and wishes she could change it. Yet the song grew to reflect her current struggles as well – those moments “of confusion and sadness” that can arise even when outwardly you have found love, community, and purpose. Life presents paradoxes; just as we work to build fulfilling lives, inner shadows may still linger that feel outside our control.
For the listener, the title Can’t Solve It implies an attitude of resignation. However, Annie finds acknowledgment and peace in recognizing some challenges simply exist beyond our power to immediately remedy. Check out the song below!
