Alt-femme indie rock band Pool Boys releases their new single, Philadelphia. It talks about personal discovery and the struggle to overcome deeply ingrained challenges. The song starts by reflecting on youthful dreams and aspirations in Philadelphia, with dreams being poured onto paper and a desire to be “enough” in a world that doesn’t accept everyone.
The parallel to waking a mother and learning how to tread water hints at a period of awakening and coming to terms with your environment. The “thorn” is a metaphor for a deep-seated issue or struggle that the band has been grappling with over time. It took them seven years to identify it, and they anticipate it will take many more years to fully address and remove it.
The verses show restraint as the harmonies dance on thin ice, with a hint of tension in Pool Boys’ delivery. This builds excitement for what’s to come. Sure enough, the chorus provides a release into a more expansive soundscape. By the time we reach the outro, things truly sink in.
