23-year-old artist Cate Tomlinson has been gaining popularity in the pop scene for quite some time. She does this by staying true to herself and, above all, releasing good music. With her second EP, The Side Effects of You, Cate shows exceptional growth. It has very deep writing.

The Ring of Fire opens the project. In the song, Cate admires a boy’s fiery nature and follows him through the “ring of fire,” showing her readiness to face the consequences of this dangerous love. Sonically, it resembles Madison Beer. Brilliant, isn’t it?

Half Lover, track number two, explores the implications of a one-sided relationship, articulating the uncertainty of loving someone who can’t or won’t reciprocate. It juxtaposes gritty choruses with more bubbly verses, forming a striking contrast.

My EX FRIEND follows. The lyrics depict a former friend who exploited Cate’s trust and kindness, acting deceitfully and manipulatively. Cate states that the song provides her with empowerment, allowing her to take back control over her narrative. Its vibey sound will make you feel like you’re on another planet.

The fourth song, Like the boys, really has it all. I like how the vocals land on the glamorous backdrop, for example. But the chorus hits home as well. The song’s lyrics talk about Cate’s strong feelings for a girl, comparing them with those she usually has for men.

Strawberry Moon details Cate’s personal experience with seasonal depression, especially during summer. The song’s title refers to the first full moon in June, which often appears with a pinkish hue and coincides with the singer’s melancholy during this period. You can expect catchy aspects such as a guitar solo to immerse you in the music.

Lastly, we have the focus track, Side Effects. It sheds light on the long-term effects of a toxic relationship mentally. Cate’s thoughts are underscored by emotional guitar work and moody strings. A lot of punchy drumming can be heard in the fiery last section.

Cate truly outdid herself. The Side Effects of You is a timeless collection of songs. Check it out below!
