Singer-songwriter Marlene Oak went through a difficult time, undergoing a psychosis that blurred the lines between reality and fantasy. Thankfully, she found solace in music. She picked up her pen and began writing songs, which are now on the EP Big Time. This compact collection is full of honesty and emotional weight.
The title track opens the project with a bold declaration of purpose. The lyrics speak to leaping into love and embracing something real and thrilling without reservation. Folk-like instrumentals, driven by acoustic guitar and strings, suit the context well. Red Clouds veers similarly musically, but is different enough to stand alone. I love how it comes together.
Burning Flame represents transformation. The title and message are rooted in the metaphor “The hottest fires forge the toughest steel”, meaning that the most difficult challenges can shape us into stronger versions of ourselves.
The EP’s final tune Until Morning Comes is a soul-searching anthem. It relates to times when the world feels unsteady and we lose sight of who we are or where we’re going. But at its heart, the song is a silent protest against that chaos. Marlene urges us to get to the bottom of things, to confront what scares us, and to trust in one another. How inspiring!
