Becca James is a London-based alt-pop artist originally from the North of England. She refuses to conform to trends and instead frees herself from them. With her debut album God in Chains: Vol. 1, she dazzles. It’s for those who want to hide away for a moment of reflection.
Lotus opens the project. Accompanied by beautiful piano chords, Becca’s voice sparkles. During the song, she expresses her wish to see someone find themselves again and grow like a lotus flower.
Revolution builds on the sound of the first track, but expands it further. I love how the cinematic strings bounce on the haunting beat. The vocals are also beautifully layered, especially during the chorus, giving off empowerment.
Begging For Love blends the finest elements of the first two tracks. The outcome? A brilliant track. Then comes God in Chains, which ventures into acoustic territory but also becomes quite theatrical in the second half.
Echo Chamber uses an experimental sonic palette and is rhythm-based, making it slightly little different from the other tracks. Holy Bed and Bloom feel like the perfect closers because they represent healing and aim to make you feel heaven-sent for a moment.
God in Chains: Vol. 1 hits the soul from the moment you click play. Becca understands the language of music, which is a big benefit.
Becca will bring God in Chains: Vol. 1 to life in a series of intimate acoustic shows this autumn and winter, accompanying Matreya on his tour. The tour, entitled From Darkness to Light, will stop at The Green Note, Camden (24 Nov), Boston Tea Party Harborne, Birmingham (29 Nov), and Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds (3 Dec). It marks a bold opening chapter ahead of Becca’s companion B-side release next year, The Alchemy (Vol. 2).
As you can see, besides listening to this album, there’s still plenty to look forward to. This is definitely Becca’s era.
