With HELIX, Cole Lumpkin delivers a second album that confirms the creative force he is. While his first work, OTHERWORLDS, was recorded over five years, HELIX condenses intense emotional experiences into a concentrated five-month production cycle, manifesting in productions both precise and cogent.
The project’s sound palette is richly layered, juxtaposing analog warmth with digital fidelity, while maintaining a distinctly “organic” aesthetic, free of AI-generated textures, a choice that only can be admired.
Structurally, the album prioritizes fluidity over rigid forms. Recurring rhythmic and melodic motifs establish a helical symmetry that underscores the concept of cyclical growth referenced in the title. The harmonic language is bold, meaning modal shifts, chromatic passing tones, and striking chord inversions punctuate otherwise intimate arrangements. The dynamics are refined, alternating between clean, airy passages and dense, climactic crescendos.
One of the tracks I like most from HELIX is 90 Degrees, which spirals with evolving grooves. Bamboozled By Love marks another highlight, mainly due to its catchy guitar riffs. Softer cannot be forgotten either. I love the atmospheric direction and the subtle classical influences it has.
With regards to lyrics, HELIX excels in its confessional transparency. The writing explores depersonalization, sexuality, the illness of a loved one, and the physical and emotional toll of life on tour, delivering these narratives largely free of clichés. The word selections reflect the fluctuations of anxiety and the search for identity, often employing poetic language
Lumpkin is in top form here, ensuring you listen all the way through. He should be praised for his uniqueness and willingness to break boundaries. Check out HELIX below!
