It’s common for songs to be built layer by layer, track by track, piece by piece, until they feel complete. Izzie Yardley’s Borderline was made the other way. Recorded live with a full band together at Farleigh, it has the rare quality of sounding like it happened in real life, with real people. And you can feel it.

Borderline opens in near-silence, meditative and still, before slowly giving way to something far more immersive. Guitars and drums don’t so much drive the song as circle it, moving like currents beneath the surface of a body of water you can’t quite see the bottom of. Yardley herself describes Borderline as “treading the bottom of a murky lake”, and it’s hard to think of a more accurate description. The soundscape is peacefully consuming.

The song turns inward lyrically. Where much of the surrounding cultural noise deals in external validation and the search for reassurance from others, Borderline plants its flag in self-trust and self-support.

Yardley continues to be on top of her game. Check out Borderline below!
