Ava Valianti loves her birthday. That matters, because Birthday Cake depicts how she imagines it would feel if she weren’t.
It starts with a simple question: what if balloons, candles, and a perfectly iced cake stopped feeling like a celebration and started feeling like proof? Another year gone. Another wish that fades instead of coming true. Valianti follows that thought into the kitchen, where the candles burn unattended and no one steps in.
The fire imagery feels dramatic on purpose. Watching the house fall apart, letting the candles burn up the kitchen, it’s basically the moment when you want everything to burn down just so you don’t have to hold it together anymore. But underneath that, it’s really about disappointment and growing up. About understanding that hope can be beautiful, but it can also make you blind.
