Born in Kazakhstan, classically trained from the age of five, derailed by health struggles and a complicated upbringing, then creatively reborn in the Spanish countryside, Lana Crow has lived enough lives to fill several records, and In Spirit feels like the moment all of them finally converge. Where her debut I Will proclaimed her arrival and Live It deepened the palette, this third chapter does something altogether more ambitious. It helps create a world.
The album moves at a fascinating pace. I Do opens warmly, making you want to absorb everything on the spot, while Orwellian Times pulls the temperature down into something darker, arriving exactly when it needs to. No Secret hits differently in its remastered form, with familiar elements gaining new weight in the context of the whole album. So Done has an emotional directness that cuts clean through. Unknow the Known and What Brings You Back are the types of songs that makes you stop whatever you’re doing because of their energy. The title track closes everything out with the grounded clarity the whole record has been aiming for.
