Shaela Miller’s latest release, Refashioned Selex has a refreshingly rebellious feel. Most remix projects are the musical counterparts of deleted scenes, but this one behaves more like an alternate universe.

The EP takes Miller’s already cinematic songwriting and intensifies it. Synths pulse where guitars once breathed, and space becomes an instrument. Throughout these five tracks, Miller and collaborator Taylor Ackerman don’t simply remix songs, rather they question them, asking what happens when country storytelling wanders into an abandoned nightclub occupied by ghosts, strobe lights, and vintage drum machines.

Shaela shares: “When we started remixing songs from After The Masquerade, it was just for the fun of experimentation. Halfway through, I realized I wanted to release them so listeners could experience the songs in a new but familiar way.”

The title track, After the Masquerade (Refashioned), establishes the tone from the outset. The original heartfelt core remains intact, but now it comes cloaked in icy synth textures and shadowy production. Station, and I Can’t Love, and In My Dreams benefit particularly well from the transformation. Stripped of some of their original warmth, they gain an intriguing vulnerability. Tunnel, featuring Sinzere, opens another door entirely, as its sonic palette expands into a more genre-bending, contemporary direction. Sinzere’s thoughtful contribution strengthens the song’s bubbly atmosphere without taking away from it.

I can’t say anything else but that Refashioned Selex has impressed me. Many artists spend years trying to convince listeners they’re able to evolve. Miller appears uninterested in convincing anyone. She simply does it. Refashioned Selex embodies the energy of an artist giving herself carte blanche to follow instinct wherever it leads. Start listening below!
