Seven years is a long time between albums. Long enough to see your children grow up too fast, fall more and more in love with the woman next to you, and find yourself sitting on the porch wondering how time has flown by so quickly. That’s exactly the album Rodney Atkins made.
Rooted in the red clay and rolling hills of East Tennessee, where Atkins grew up, the twelve-track collection, entitled True South, is a richly layered portrait of a life lived to the fullest. The thread of family runs like a common thread through everything. The Years Are Short hits hard for any parent who has ever missed a milestone, while Toys In The Dirt and Marry Me Again document Atkins’ life in a small town with his wife Rose Falcon and his three sons with the genuineness that can only come from someone who is actually living it. Watching You 2.0, featuring son Elijah, who served as the inspiration for the original (career-defining 3x platinum number 1 hit nearly twenty years ago) marks the album’s most moving moment, a rounding gesture that deserves every gram of emotional weight. Believe Me, a penultimate duet recorded with Falcon himself, closes that chapter with subdued intensity.
Elsewhere, the album lets loose. Helluvit enters with a smile and tells the true story of Atkins’ marriage proposal at 2 a.m. in Las Vegas using his characteristic playful humor. Hole In One, featuring tinkling piano notes and high pub energy that has always suited Atkins well, is an easy crowd favorite. The title track, previously heard in the Netflix crime series The Waterfront, and Small Town After All form the foundation of the album, embracing Southern pride.
With over 5 billion streams and six number 1 radio hits, Atkins has long earned his place as one of the most iconic voices in country music. True South doesn’t chase that legacy, but simply adds to it in a convincing way!
