Veya is the artist project of Haarlem-based multi-instrumentalist Eva Scheltema. Her new single, Written, opens phenomenally with a violin that transitions into a fairly understated, groovy bass lick. From there, the sound builds up beautifully; the violin returns during the chorus, for instance, and some shimmering synths also sprinkle the arrangement. The vocals are consistently steady, exactly as you’d expect.
Whenever Veya sings this song, it reminds her that, while you can’t always control what happens to you, you can control how you respond to it. And she’s absolutely right. It’s certainly better than dwelling on anger or sadness, which are emotions prone to making you feel stuck, even if you don’t necessarily realize it right away.
The fact that Veya always keeps her music in line with who she is makes it real. You can’t help but be fascinated by Written. Check it out below!
