Rising indie pop artist/producer/composer Devon Michael presents Grant Me the Serenity and Embers, two pieces she wrote in connection with the short film Grant Me the Serenity by Jessica Pinfield. The film, starring Pinfield, follows a recovering alcoholic father, played by Steven Weber, who doesn’t come home on time, causing his daughter to relapse into self-destructive behavior. The first piece serves as the original score, whereas Embers functions as the film’s emotional epilogue. I find both pieces compelling, particularly because of their emotional focus.
Grant Me the Serenity impressed me immediately with its arrangement. The clear piano theme gradually develops through industrial textures, preserving the piece’s core while adding a cinematic sonic layer. I love how naturally the production heightens the tension.
Embers opts for a more pop-like approach, with vocals this time around. It reflects on the fragile boundary between empathy and self-awareness, as well as the solitary journey towards finding peace with what cannot be changed. I feel these themes are beautifully communicated in the writing.
All in all, this is a beautiful expression of Michael’s artistic talent. Both Grant Me the Serenity and Embers fit together exceptionally well. You can check them out below if you’re interested!
