Leading retrowave duo BUNNY X, from New York, is releasing their third full-length album, Love on a High Floor, via Aztec Records. It pays homage to the ’80s in both sound and vibes, drawing inspiration from films such as Working Girl, Bright Lights, Big City, and American Psycho, among others. For a moment, you might think you’ve stepped into a time machine. But that’s actually a positive thing. Sometimes, it’s good to go back to the past.
The teenage nostalgia and innocence of BUNNY X’s debut album, Young & In Love, are expanded upon on Love on a High Floor, with those same characters now grown into adults. This transition becomes clear on the opening track, Starting Dreams, featuring a synth line that climbs like an elevator counting floors, hopeful and a little trembling.
The album subsequently offers quite some highlights. One Touch captures the playful side of the record’s Officewave concept, where office life, fleeting crushes, and business ambitions are twisted into an idealized romantic fantasy. After Hours continues that narrative, exploring what happens when an office crush follows you off the workplace, while concurrently adding a more pop-oriented touch to BUNNY X’s signature style.
Business Trip strikes a dark tone and is one of the album’s deepest tracks. It describes a relationship slowly falling apart, where career ambitions and the pursuit of money take precedence over love. On the other side of the emotional spectrum lies the title track, Love on a High Floor, a dreamy and rhythmic collaboration with Sellorekt/LA Dreams, reflecting the romantic and decadent spirit of the album. Finally, Lovers brings things to an end in a ballad-like style that expresses a deep desire for love.
BUNNY X has definitely impressed me. I’ve heard many synth-driven albums by now, but this one is genuinely special and, above all, different. Every detail feels carefully considered, making the album immersive. It never feels like just a collection of 11 songs thrown together; there’s a clear vision behind it, and BUNNY X executes that vision well.
Go give Love on a High Floor a listen as soon as you can. It’s the perfect soundtrack for the summer.
