Rising singer-songwriter Emma O’Reilly always manages to top herself artistically. This is reflected in magnificent fashion on her new (and first since 2016) EP, Sailing Home, which exudes brilliantness. The tunes are folk-oriented yet explore experimental territory, alternating the rough and the smooth, the ethereal and the earthed.

Only Love opens the EP, and it sounds great. Driven by guitar, the arrangement unfolds naturally. The lyrics here are about searching for meaning, connection, and something solid to hold onto when everything around you seems to be spinning in circles.

River follows the vibe of the first tune, but is now complemented by instruments like percussion, trumpet, trombone, and alto sax. O’Reilly discusses the courage it takes to begin again after heartbreak and grief. She keeps things relatable throughout.

Aedh starts in a choir-like format before getting bigger. It’s so fascinating and original. The song deals with giving someone your love and vulnerability, while having growing doubts about whether they’ll return it.

Getting in the Way features the best guitar work on the EP, making you tear up maybe. It validates the experience of being completely overwhelmed by the world and makes you realize how exhausting your own thoughts and desires can be. O’Reilly guides us through news overload, sleeplessness, frustration, and the feeling of being stuck without any clear direction.

Taken as a whole, Sailing Home offers an impressively adventurous set of tracks. They all contribute something unique, with O’Reilly’s signature songwriting and expressive voice providing a unifying thread. Just check out this project. Believe me, it’ll make your day more special… no, your week… no, your month… nooo, your year!
